News and Articles

Here are the instructions for submitting an entry in Norwegian Game Awards 2010. This is a lot of text, but all of it is important so be sure to read it.

Deadline and Submission Choices

To compete, an entry must be submitted to Norwegian Game Awards by 08:00 on August 08th 2010 at the latest. An entry may be submitted by ordinary mail on CD/DVD or electronically via the website. The latter method is recommended.

It is allowed for entries to use special hardware, such as gamepads or proprietary controllers. These should be submitted by ordinary mail to arrive no later than the submission deadline. You can also arrange to drop off your hardware personally to our office at Richard Birkelandsvei 2B, 7491 Trondheim; contact Alexander Nietzold (nietzold@gameawards.no, 92642726)in this case. Do not forget to make sure the organizers can send your property back to you. Please send a pre-paid return package for easy return or arrange for pickup at the Grand Finale in Trondheim August 27th.

The mail address is:
StartNTNU/Norwegian Game Awards
Richard Birkelandsvei 2B

The upload limit on our website for an entry is 100 MB. If your entry is larger than 100 MB, you can solve this by splitting your archives (by using rar). Login and click on the Edit link for your entry on your “Home” page to see the file submission form.

Requirements on Submissions and Participants

The following must be done before the deadline:
  • An entry must be registered on on the website
  • All participants for an entry must be registered on the website and listed as such on the entry profile page with their respective project roles
  • The entry profile must be filled in with all applicable information on the entry, such as used technologies and target platforms (please do this as soon as possible)

The following must be submitted before the deadline:

A zip archive, containing the following directories:
  • mov – containing the movie trailer (ca 30-60 sec)
  • doc – containing documents with instructions on installing, running and playing the game
  • exe – containing the game, either directly runnable or runnable after an installation process
  • pdf – containing the concept document for your game

Important: if you only wish to compete in our Best Concept category you do not have to deliver the first three direcories listed above (mov, doc and exe). Just upload your concept document in the "concept document upload box" you will find if you click "edit" on your entry site.

The archive should not be password protected. It is advisable, but not required, to submit a file containing a SFV, MD5 or SHA1 checksum for the zip archive. Then, if the archive is shown to be corrupt, you will be contacted and asked to upload the file again.

The Movie Trailer

Teams are required to submit a short promotional trailer, about 30-60s long, that shows the best parts of the game and highlights the elements that someone with little time to play the game might miss. Concerning codec, use DivX, XviD, H.264 or any other codec that works in VLC on both Windows and non-Windows platforms (such as Mac). Note that the trailer can make a lasting first impression on the jury. These trailers will be shown to the jury before the game is tried.

Documentation

Please put a file containing installation and running instructions in a text file called readme.txt. The organizers do not wish to spend time troubleshooting the installation procedure. Also Include a short manual for playing the game. The manual should contain an accurate description of the control scheme and buttons used; we strongly encourage submitting a control layout image. Since there will be no time to appreciate brain-busters, submit a walkthrough along with savegames at appropriate points in the game (if applicable). The manual must be in either pdf, txt or doc (not docx) format, and be named either manual.pdf, manual.txt or manual.doc.

The Game

The game should either be directly runnable after zipping up the submitted archive, or there should be a program that installs the game (exceptions are games that are modifications of other games or games that require emulators, see below). The executable file which runs the game should have an obvious name, such as start.exe, run.exe or gamename.exe. The readme.txt file should contain the name of the executable that runs the game. The game must run on the latest version of Windows XP.

Modifications and Emulators

If the entry is a modification (“mod”) of another game, please specify clearly in readme.txt which version of the game the modification works with. Also, step-by-step instructions for installing the game and any patches must be included there. Similarly, if the entry must be run with an emulator, specify in readme.txt which emulator and version, and give a download link. If possible, submit the complete emulator.

Source Code

Teams are not supposed to upload the source code for games. However, Norwegian Game Awards reserves the right to require submission of the source code, if the jury deems it necessary. A team that does not submit the source code when required risks disqualification of its entry.

External Dependencies

If an entry requires access to an external server, e.g. for multiplayer online gaming, such a server must be available from the deadline on August 8th to the end of the jury weekend on August 22nd.

Nominations and the Grand Finale

Nominees for prizes will be contacted no later than 22nd of August, and announced publicly on Monday August 23rd. Nominated teams will have reserved space to show off their game at the Games Expo on the Grand Finale August 27th in Trondheim. The organizers highly recommend taking this opportunity to gain publicity and contacts in the industry. All winners must be able to show valid ID records, and at least half of the team must be able to show valid student ID records.
